Start your Char Dham from Rishikesh. Ashrams, yoga centers, Laxman Jhula, Ram Jhula, river rafting, and top hotels for pilgrims.

If Haridwar is where the spiritual journey begins with fire and ceremony, Rishikesh — just 24 km upstream — is where it begins with stillness, yoga, and the sound of the Ganga rushing over boulders. The self-styled "Yoga Capital of the World" has been drawing seekers, pilgrims, and adventurers for centuries, and today serves as an equally important departure point for the Char Dham Yatra.

Rishikesh as a Spiritual Starting Point

Rishikesh's position at the foot of the Himalayan foothills — where the Ganga narrows and flows swift and clear between forested hills — makes it feel like a threshold. The city's famous Triveni Ghat (evening aarti), the suspension bridges of Laxman and Ram Jhula, and the dozens of ashrams lining the riverbanks create an atmosphere of extraordinary spiritual intensity.

For Char Dham pilgrims, spending 1–2 days in Rishikesh before departure offers:

  • Physical rest before the demanding journey
  • Spiritual preparation through yoga, meditation, or ashram darshan
  • Last chance to stock up on medicines, equipment, and supplies

Triveni Ghat Evening Aarti

The evening Ganga aarti at Triveni Ghat in Rishikesh (begins at 6:00–6:30 PM, varies by season) is slightly more intimate than Haridwar's Har Ki Pauri aarti. The ghat is smaller, the crowd more manageable, and the atmosphere more contemplative. Many pilgrims find the Rishikesh aarti more moving as a preparation for the mountains ahead.

Laxman Jhula and Ram Jhula

These two famous iron suspension bridges span the Ganga and connect the eastern and western banks of Rishikesh. Laxman Jhula (450 metres north of the city) is the older and more famous — the crossing itself, with the Ganga rushing below and monkeys swinging from the cables, is a memorable experience. The Ram Jhula is slightly larger and connects the ashram district.

Note: As of recent years, the original Laxman Jhula bridge has been closed for safety renovation; a new bridge nearby serves the same route. Check current status locally.

Parmarth Niketan and Ashrams

Rishikesh has over 100 ashrams and yoga centers. Parmarth Niketan is the largest and most welcoming to short-term visitors — offering yoga classes, meditations, Sanskrit lessons, and evening Ganga aarti participation. A one-day or overnight stay at an ashram before the Char Dham journey is a beautiful way to set spiritual intention.

River Rafting as an Add-On Activity

Rishikesh is India's premier river rafting destination. The Ganga section from Shivpuri (16 km) to Rishikesh offers Grade III rapids. A half-day rafting trip (₹800–₹1,500 per person) can be a wonderful activity the day before beginning the Char Dham drive — physical, fun, and deeply connected to the sacred river.

Hotels and Budget Stays

Rishikesh has accommodation for every budget:

  • Budget ashrams and guesthouses: ₹500–₹1,500 (simple rooms, vegetarian meals)
  • Mid-range hotels near Tapovan/Laxman Jhula: ₹1,500–₹4,000
  • Comfortable riverside resorts: ₹5,000–₹15,000
