High Mountain Book is a small, author-led website built around Memphis Moon, a Civil War spy thriller by Matthew M. Watkins. The novel grew out of a real but thinly documented piece of Southern history: sisters Virginia and Lottie Moon, who were remembered for generations mainly as Confederate sympathizers. Watkins took those fragments and built a full story around them, following Ginnie Moon from Oxford, Ohio, to wartime Memphis, where her father’s death pulls her into a world of secrecy, divided loyalty, and love.
Before turning to fiction, Watkins spent six years in the U.S. Navy and thirty years as an executive in the global plastics industry. After retiring, he spent years researching the 1860s South, and as a mechanical engineer by training he paid close attention to the mills, machinery, and daily life of the period. His journey to becoming a novelist was featured in USA Today.
